Architectural Piece of Vadakkunnathan Temple, Thrissur

Renowned as Thenkailasam and Vrishabhachalam, Vadakkunnathan Temple is amongst the largest and pre historic Shiva temples around the periphery of Gods own Country Kerala. Located within the serene ambiance of Thrissur city, the temple depicts the typical illustration of Kerala architecture.

Encircled by massive colossal of rocks the temple commands an area of nearly 9 acres and within the reach of fortification there are four gopurams and what’s amazing is each of it are facing the direction of all side.

The theatre of temple which is known as Koothambalam is renowned all over the world and its four brilliant gateways and stone work needs special remark as it reflects a wisdom and skill of craftsman.   

Imposing walls which reaches the doors of courtyard has been crafted in such a way so that it could command all the direction which is another splendid work of architect. When it comes to the presiding deity here you will witness the shrines of Lord Paramashiva, Parvathy, Sankaranarayana, Ganapathy, Sri Rama and Sri Krishna which relates the mind higher spiritual perspective.

Since the site is eminent for its elegance of work here you will witness an exquisite murals painting and when it comes to relate the crest of the central shrine it conjures the magnificence of superb work and structural sensation.

As per the mythology it is believed that Parasurama constructed this temple and the splendid area which he commissioned to work out this brilliance entices tourist from all across the world specifically Hindus who never feel weary appreciating the glides of this historical and inspirational temple.

When it comes to celebrating the journals of festival Pooram requires special mention because it is during this festival you will witness the colours of procession but the main magnitude of the festival is Elanjitharamelam and Kudamattom. 

Beside that other important festivals which get celebrate within the premises of the divine temple are Shivaratri, Aanayoottu and many more.
As per the archaeological survey it is believed that temple dates back its history to 350 years and when it comes to its religious potency make sure to visit the site during the time of April and May you will come to know the importance of the temple.

How to Get There                                   

Nearest Airport is Cochin International Airport and Nearest Railway Station is Thrissur Railway Station which is located at a distance of 2 km away from the temple. By road Thrissur is very well connected with the North-South Corridor National Highway System which in turn has made travelling via road more convenient and comfortable.
