Conjuring History and Significance of Kaviyoor Rock Cut Cave temple



Somewhere down the Shore of Manimala River in Pathanamthitta, Kaviyoor Trikkukkudi rock cut or Mahadeva temple is one of the Historical temples and owing to its importance it has been preserved and maintained by the Archaeological Department of the state.

Its architecture that replicates the styles of Pallava dynasty is one of the noted features and due its exclusive design and formation historians and archeologist have cited the grandeur to be an edifice of the 18th century.

As per the legends the engravings here quotes the glory of stone sculpture in Kerala and specimens of it have been treasured to make sure the history to be as same as before to some extent. Preserved in a square cave here you will see the shrine of Lord Shiva which is symbolized in Sivalinga is the focal shrine of the temple. Measuring the height of approximately 3 ft which In turn is exquisitely carved speaks a volume of religious potency and belief.

Adjacent to main shrine of Lord Shiva you will witness an idol of Ganapathy, Maharshi and Dwarapalakas. Beside that here you will also see Hanuman temple which is located at the hilly side of the Kaviyoor. Established and procured in Gable style architecture which is quiet different to Kerala style this temple is amongst the most visited site of the area.

Historical Facts
As there is a contradiction between the dates as some historians by evaluating its design and structure says it is a 10th century monument while other believes it was established during 18th century. While there are no strict documents and records that trace the abject record of its formation but one thing for sure this temple is amongst the most historical and spiritual temple around the site.

Festivals
1. Thiruvutsavam every year during the month between December and January this festival is celebrated in Dhanu Masa and calls of on 10th day by Araattu Ezhunnellippu. During this festival they recognize Utsavabali, Seva and Pallivetta which is the main functions of the celebration.

2. Sivaratri, commence during the month of February and March this festival is one of the most important festival to commemorate the divine force of Lord Shiva. During this event they lights 8000 diyas around the site of temple.

3. Sahasra Kalasam, renowned as abhisekham or blessings this festival is one of the highlighted festivals of the rock cut temple or of Mahadeva temple.

Architecture
When it comes to architecture and designs there is no match with others as historical pediments which is built in Pallava style speaks the volume of art beside that an intricate carvings on rock and sculptural facts reveals the symphony and hegemony of this pristine temple which is quiet distinct to other styles and potrayel.

How to Reach
The nearest railway station is Thiruvalla which is approximately 5 km away from here and it will just take a minute of walk to reach the site.

Nearest airport is Thiruvananthapuram International Airport which is about 119 km from Pathanamthitta.
